A MAJOR Make-up Dissapointment/

At the beginning of spring I was really obsessed with finding a perfect foundation for my face. I did my research, lots of research, and I bought the Dior Airflash and Chanel Double Perfection Lumiere which I reviewed here, and I also ordered the Houglass Immaculate Liquid to Powder Foundation (I thought it would be a nice option for "oily" summer days!). I am only reviewing it now because it took me SO much effort and time to get it here in Belarus! The Hourglass brand is only sold in US in those stores that wouldn't ship to mail-forwarding companies like Meest or Shopfans, not even would they accept our credit cards! And, of course, there is no way they would ship to Belarus, hardly any US online stores do - but that is a different story!

So, a normal person would take that as a sign and forget the idea. I, on the other hand was determined to buy myself some Hourglass make up! I found someone in the US who could order these for me (for a fee of course), and then forward my order to the mail-forwarding company.

So, it took me 2 months to finally get my order ... and I couldn't be disappointed more.

I bought the Imaculate Foundation, the Foundation/Blush Brush, the Hidden Corrective Concealer, the Mineral Veil Primer and the Eyeshadow Domed Brush.

The only thing I like is the eyeshadow brush, the rest are beyond BAD!

Number one was the Foundation.

Ok, the idea is great: acne-fighting foundation (which is partially true as it contains clay) for oily skin.

I got myself the lightest shade, which is Pearl, and the manufacturer describes it as very fair with a neutral balance of undertones. Well, it turned out to be ... ORANGE! Not even yellow, but ORANGE. They have about 16 shades in this foundation and the lightest one is ORANGE? What is the darkest one then? - I am even afraid to think! That is such a major dissapointment! The only way I found for it to work for me is using it together with their Primer, but what the f @%/.? A 55 $ foundation to be used STRICTLY WITH the 55 $ primer??? And, besides, I don't even like the primer! Not any primer, not this one in particular. It is too silicony, too drying and basically useless. The only reason for it to be used is to prevent the foundation from going to the waste can right now! I guess, the problem is that the foundation oxidizes when in contact with skin, and the primer forms a film, that doesn't let that happen.

But the shade is not the only problem in this foundation! The second one is the smell. I know the fragrance in not a good thing in cosmetics, and many companies try to avoid it, and many succeed, like Clinique or Chanel (in some products), for example. But, God, this foundation smells so disgusting! It reminds me of the 90-s, when I was a teenager and I went to get my first facials and the aestician would put something on my face that smelled very similar. But I was 14, and those were the 90-s, and that was some hand-made stuff. But now it is already the 21st century, and do we have to buy a 55 $ foundation and put up with a smell like that? Believe me, it DOES stink!

You may have noticed, that I am not usually complaining about the money. I am on a tight budget and it takes me a lot of effort to be able to afford nice makeup stuff. The Dior and Chanel foundations I reviewed previously costed the same as this Hourglass one, and I know that good cosmetics are a splurge, especially if you've got skin problems and you are over certain age. But selling something THAT bad for $ 55 is a shame! I guess all they did was put the effort into their fancy packaging (it is fancy, indeed!) and didn't even care about the rest. I am now convinced that every single positive review I've read about this foundation was paid for.

The second major dissapointment was the Brush. It is called the Foundation/Blush Brush and it costed $ 58. Again, I wouln't even mention the money if it turned out to be a great brush. Or, if it at least was great for applying their above mentioned foundation. But not only it is a terrible brush, it does the worst job applying THEIR foundation! This foundation needs to be applied very quickly because it is a liquid-to-powder one, and it dries immediately upon application. The best results I could get in applying that foundation was with fingers or with my old unfamous-brand $ 10 foundation brush!

The Hourglass brush on the other hand, is too soft, and the bristles are too long making it USELESS in applying foundation. It might work for powder, but that is not was I was buying it for and not what they promise it to be!

As for the primer, I've already mentioned it above. Surprisingly, it wasn't even that much of disappointment because I didn't have any high expectations for it. I have my opinion set about primers and this one was the last to complete my range of dissapointments. The reason I bought it was that the Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer is the most highly rated out there, one of the most expensive and it has an SPF 15 which I thought might be be an additional benefit. So, as I've said, it is similar to all the other primers I've tried: too silicony, too drying, doesn't hide pores, doesn't help make-up last longer, does emphasize flakiness on your skin. And the one by Hourglass has this annoying BLUE color which looks weird when applying it on.

The Concealer. First problem is the shade. I got it in Pearl as well as my foundation. But it turned out to be a completely different color, not matching the foundation AT ALL! Yes, it is ORANGE as well, it is just another shade of orange!

The only thing that didn't dissapoint me is the item I only bought to qualify  for free shipping - the eyeshadow brush. It is nicely dense and firm and works fine. But it doesn't make up for all the above disappointment. My belief now is that the whole Hourglass brand is someone's smart business move: high price, fancy package, being sold at high-end department stores and nothing good inside.

I am never making that mistake again: buying something just based on reviews and advertisement,or buying  something I can't return.
